I found an Ipad now I am being accused of theft!?

I was at work yesterday and found an Ipad 2 in the bathroom. I was on my lunch hour. So I was exited and put it in my car. Then I left my office to take paperwork to another office. I saw that there was commotion at the security cams. I later asked a co-worker what all the fuss was about. He informed me someone was looking for their Ipad. I informed him that I had it, he suggested that I return it and I agreed. I went to my car to get it, and on my way to person's office. (her office is my offices' HR, I work on campus), she was in another office and was supper upset. So I chickened out to give it to her. I went to dinner with a friend and told her my situation, she told me to turn it in to the apple store. I agreed, but had to go work (I have two jobs) so she suggested to give it to her, and that her BF would turn it in for me when he went to the mall the next day. Well my coworker told someone else, and the University Police came looking for me, and I had to take them to go get it. I was not arrested but told I had committed petty theft... not too sure how that is going to hold up in court considering that I had attempted to give it to her, but didn't do so because of fear of conflict. Also I knew the apple store would handle it for me, i just wanted the return to be anonymous now I may loose my job.
